She's So High - Yes, he probably wrote this in praise of a mortal woman, but it's also a joyous hymn to the feminine divine. Besides, isn't there a bit of her in each of us? You are goddess.
Gaia - A beautiful hymn to nature and the goddess.
Up Er Mei - Ostensibly about a trip to see Buddhist temples but also conveys a strong appreciation for earth as a whole and for the blessings we already in our possession.
The Christians and the Pagans - Dar Williams is a consummate songwriter and storyteller. The Christians and the Pagans follows two women explaining to their Christian family about Yule, witches, and ultimately, understanding.
This Was Pompeii - The story of the destruction of Pompeii, told with haunting beauty.
Hymn to Her - One of the most beautiful hymns to the goddess available anywhere.
By the Light of the Moon - A song about "secrets whispered in shadows" while dancing to drumbeats under the light of the moon.
Witchy Woman - A fun classic.
Cuscatlan - As a whole, this is possibly one of my favorite albums. Cuscatlan is a melodic commentary on war and the abuse of the earth. The lead singer's sprightly voice lilts "fatherland raped motherhood
and told her it was for the global good" with an unsettling cheeriness.
Witches Song - A bit dark, but if this isn't about a coven of witches I don't know what is. Julianna Hatfield's version on the Craft soundtrack adds much needed spark to Faithfull's original.
Exploring the Blue - No, he's not specific about who he's looking for, but given he dives down into the depths of the ocean and explores the expanse of sky from mountaintops searching for her, I'm willing to jump to conclusions.
I Believe in You - Bloom finds himself amidst nature, alone but "not without you." Who is it he believes in? Again he doesn't say...or does he? "Every river has its own spring.
The day goes to its own sunset.
I'm alone now,
But not without you."
Listen to the Hoofbeats - Native American spiritual power reawakens because "Mother earth been too long crying."
the following selections were contributed by eirean of the celtic moon circle: (submit your faves!)
U2 - ACHTUNG, BABY, 1991. (Selected Track: Mysterious Ways.)
Mysterious Ways - "U2 has a song that starts '...take a walk with your sister, the moon...' and later on there's a line '...if you want to touch the sky, you better learn how to kneel, [on your knees, boy]...' Is a song, in my opinion, that states that you need to get in touch with nature and embrace the higher planes in order to sort out your own life and feel comfortable with yourself. And it rocks. ;)"
"What witch can't love Stevie? The songs Belladonna, Rhiannon (obviously!), Night Bird, The Highwayman and (with Fleetwood Mac) Sisters of the Moon. The Wild Heart, especially, is a very Goddess-oriented album in its entirety. Just picture Stevie on the cover in triplicate in her long hooded cloak... If you haven't heard these songs, go listen!"
"Then there's that recent alternative song 'Counting Blue Cars'... the chorus throughout is: 'Tell me all your thoughts on God...'cause I'd really like to meet HER... ask her what and who we are... Tell me all your thoughts on God...'cause I'm on my way to see HER...tell me am I very far...' Just a song about reflecting on the greater spiritual nature of life one summer afternoon..."
"And finally The Music of the Night from Phantom of the Opera. Sing this one to yourself next time you do ritual under the full moon in your back yard..."
